 Executive Summary

America ’s road transportation system is choking under the combined impact of an estimated 251 million* vehicles. Look around in your own city. Stoplight proliferation, inefficient interchanges, poorly maintained vehicles, solo drivers, impaired drivers, lost drivers, lawless drivers, slow drivers and lack of parking result in rush-hour gridlock, accidents, injuries, fatalities, staggering economic losses, stressed-out citizens, road rage — and very long travel times.

At local levels, "fixes" for gridlock have been implemented, but traffic volume always outgrows the "solutions." Our current road transportation system is essentially obsolete, but we are stuck with it unless a more advanced system is developed, supported and adopted. You will learn about such an intelligent transportation system in our presentation.

Meanwhile… to prop up our dying transportation system, the nation funds massively-expensive traffic-law enforcement, emergency health care, insurance, road maintenance, and more conventional road-building. Many other serious problems arise out of our current system, deeply INJURING individuals and society at large.

What can be done?

The American Standards Institute for Automated Transport Systems (ASI/ATS) was established to present a unified vision for automated transport, and has patented standards of design, performance, engineering and safety for vehicles, operating systems and infrastructure.

ASI/ATS invites comments from all citizens and participation of interested parties in the development of software applications, components, controls, sensors, communication devices, and entire vehicles designed to travel on both automated and non-automated roadways.

In this concept-level introduction to a specific intelligent transportation system, ASI/ATS addresses:

  • automated highways and roadway infrastructure
  • automated control of cars
  • automated traffic routing
  • uninterrupted origin-to-destination travel
  • universal interstate interchanges
  • automated parking
  • level-of-service standards
  • automated roadway grid concepts for cities
  • automated grocery delivery
  • concept cars for intelligent transporation systems

Future automated cars of the world proposed by ASI/ATS include:

  • fuel-efficient commuter cars and trucks
  • handicap-accessible family cars
  • metropolitan mass-transit vehicles
  • luxury vacation cruisers
  • interstate mass-transit vehicles
  • tiny unmanned errand-runners
  • huge cargo-transport trucks

Also addressed in this presentation (flash movie and web site chapters) :

  • implementation of an intellegent road transportation system
  • private ownership and taxi-style models to pay for automated transport
  • environmental, economic, public-safety, and esthetic issues.

Technical details are covered in the forthcoming Intermediate and Advanced sections.
